For the first time ever, Sky Sports will be showing over 300 live La Liga matches throughout the season, completing a deal which will bring a truly comprehensive schedule of Spanish football across their various platforms. This announcement highlights the level of commitment that Sky are putting into one of the worlds most famous leagues, and should work to bolster their football schedules in the battle against BT Sport, who now have the Champions League to broadcast. With an 'unrivaled' schedule of football, Sky Sports viewers will be able to enjoy more coverage than ever before this season across TV, online and mobile devices, so you're never without a game to watch.
La Liga games will broadcast live on a regular Sky channel if they don't clash with a Premier League or Football League match, in which case they'll be available on the red button and Sky's digital TV channel, Sky Sports Xtra which can be accessed online or via the Sky Sports app. Alongside live games, fans will also be able to keep up to date with rumours, news, previews and match reports from the Spanish league on Sky Sports HQ and across online and social media platforms. A new dedicated La Liga section on the Sky Sports websites will include a transfer news service throughout the season and in depth game by game analysis.
This news comes after Sky announced that they extended their deal with La Liga in order to bring their association into its 20th year. These 300 games will be split to 100 a season, and will feature the highly anticipated 'El Classico' fixtures and all of your favourite world class Spanish teams like Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Indeed, that deal is just the latest of 36 deals Sky have struck for live sports in the last 18 months.
Gary Hughes, executive producer of Sky Sports football said: “La Liga is one of the best leagues in the world with incredible players and unmissable matches. The way football fans follow the action is changing and we in Sky Sports are best placed to embrace that with seamless coverage across TV, mobile and online. For the first time, we’ll have over 300 live matches through TV, interactive and digital platforms. It’s going to be a fantastic season.”
“This is fantastic news for Sky Sports and strengthens our position as the first choice of sport in the UK and Ireland. The agreement means our viewers can enjoy the likes of Ronaldo, Messi, Bale and Neymar week in week out throughout the football season. Add to that the ‘El Clasico’ clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the league and Sky Sports viewers are sure to see some of the best football moments throughout the season. We’re proud to take our partnership with La Liga into its 20th year and remain the home of Spanish football for another three years.”
Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, added: "Sky Sports is the leading sports broadcaster for the UK and Ireland and we are delighted to continue our partnership with them for another three years. La Liga has a huge global fan base and by renewing with Sky Sports, the agreement provides us with the best possible way to showcase our league, our teams and our players to our UK and Irish audience."
