Sky Arts have had some significant successes with reality TV formats over the last few years, with Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year making headlines and discovering some incredible artists whose work is sure to grace the walls of museums for centuries to come. Naturally, Sky have sought to expand upon this format, first with Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year (coming soon to Sky Arts) and now with this, a new programme called 'Guitar Star', set to be hosted by former BBC Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman.
Guitar Star will go on a journey to find the most talented guitarists that the UK has to offer, seeking out guitarists across all genres, from classical to jazz via rock and avant-garde and blues. No stone will be left unturned in Sky's quest to discover the next great guitar star, with the winner guaranteed a spot on the main stage of Latitude Festival, the free Sky number has lit up with calls from hopeful contestants.
The nine part series, hosted by Edith Bowman, will begin with the audition stages, as tens of thousands of hopefuls are whittled down into a longlist of extremely talented guitar players. From there, the contestants will meet and be mentored by some of the most prominent guitar players on earth, with the semi-finalists even getting to record with a 'global guitar superstar' in what will be a life changing event for all involved. In addition to this, contestants will be tested on a multitude of fronts including how well they adapt to playing different genres other than their preferred style and even how well they perform in a live setting. It won't be an easy journey for our contestants, but with the help of their mentors and some internal grit, they could find their way into superstardom.
Edith Bowman, presenter of Guitar Star said: “The guitar is the most loved and most played instrument in the UK and I just know there are some fantastic unknown players out there. What’s great and refreshing about this series is that for the first time we are looking for brilliant guitar players to showcase their amazing talent. I’ve spent my life listening to and sharing great music of all kinds and I can’t wait to get stuck in to celebrating the wonders of the guitar across rock, jazz, folk, classical and beyond! As a festival lover I also can’t wait for the moment when our winner takes to the main stage at Latitude - incredible!”
Philip Edgar-Jones, Director, Sky Arts commented: “Great music is one of our big passions at Sky Arts and I’ve always dreamed of playing to crowds at a festival but alas, my rendition of Smoke on The Water won’t quite cut it for this exciting Sky Arts competition series. Whether it’s electric or acoustic, classical or rock, Guitar Star is about those undiscovered geniuses of the frets with a real passion for music of all genres. I can’t wait to see the winner perform on the main stage at The Latitude Festival and who knows, they might even be the next Clapton, Page or Hendrix…”
