It's the season for programme renewals, and following on from the news that Baz Ashmawy's 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy would be returning for its second series as Sky's most successfully exported factual TV programme of all time, we're now hearing that Desi Rascals too will be returning. The reality programme, which recently broadcast the final episode of its first series, will return for a second one at an unspecified date later in the year. The series, which has seen huge amounts of buzz on social networking sites as well as on Skys number, has revealed a whole cast of hilarious characters to the British public, and they're excited to see more.
Created by Gurinder Chadha, perhaps most famous for her works Bend it like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice, the programme was developed alongside Tony Wood, of The Only Way is Essex and Hollyoaks fame. Desi Rascals combined the best of both talents, with a cast of multi-generational British-Asian families engaging in semi-scripted reality drama in the style of TOWIE, the programme was always a surefire hit. The series, from Buccaneer Media and Bend it TV has been commissioned for another batch of 12 60 minute episodes, though a return date has not been set, simply promised within the year.
As one of the breakout programmes of 2015 thus far, Desi Rascals has invited Sky customers to shed tears, see romance blossom and have their eyes bulge with more muscles on display than you could shake a stick at. Hilarious and with a warm heart, Desi Rascals has earned itself a dedicated online fanbase who love nothing more than sharing the gossip on their favourite Sky programme. So with more still to come from the Shah’s, the Vara’s, Moses, Anj and others, and not to forget Owais’ ego, series two looks like it's going to be another classic rollercoaster of laughs and tears.
Indeed, with demand so great, Sky have had to handle calls from all over the place, even the Sky broadband technical support! There are worse problems to have though, and Celia Taylor, head of non scripted at Sky commented “I’m thrilled to confirm Desi Rascals will be returning for a second series, it’s really raised the bar for non-scripted drama. We’re very proud of the show which has attracted a loyal audience over the last six weeks due to its totally addictive nature and we look forward to re-joining the cast for more laughs, tears and heart-warming moments later in the year.”
The creative duo behind the programme, Tony Wood and Gurinder Chadha, also had this to say about the return of the programme It has been an absolute pleasure working on this show with Sky Living. Desi Rascals has made us laugh, cry and beam at the TV with pride. We have shown a reality to Britain that has never been seen before and series 2 will allow us to delve further into the captivating world of our families.”
So, with a new series on the horizon and the promise of more drama to come, we can't wait to see what those Desi Rascals have in store for us.
